The lavalier microphone, also known as a clip-on microphone, is a particularly small and inconspicuous microphone that is attached to a person above their shirt, i.e. near their head or near the sound source. Generally, lavalier microphones are condenser microphones with an omnidirectional characteristic. Due to its size, the lavalier microphone can be partially or even completely hidden under clothing. These microphones are often used when recording speech and singing in television, theatre or musicals; especially where the microphone is not conspicuous and hands should be free.
