In principle, the handling of Pro Tools – as with other digital audio workstations – is similar to the combination of multi-track recorder and mixer, whereby the special feature lies in the additional tools that can only be implemented digitally. Accordingly, there are two main views in the program: that of the Edit window and that of the Mix window. In addition to the standard functions for recording MIDI and audio, for cutting, post-processing and mixing, the program can be expanded modularly with plug-ins for EQ, reverb, pitch correction, sampling or amp modeling, but third-party providers often have to be used here. Operating characteristics are u. a. the so-called Smart Tool, which makes it possible to trim, mark, move and set fades with one and the same tool.
